We get behind things in Syracuse.

We get behind things in Syracuse.

Nothing against other communities, I am sure they get behind their community events, too. But we live here, so let’s talk about Syracuse.

It does not matter if it is the 34,616 that parked their cars in snow and trudged up the hill to see the Syracuse basketball game last Saturday, the 2500 people who will show up to run the Tipp Hill Run this Saturday, the over 600 people who will show up each week to train for the Dunn Tire Mountain Goat Run starting March 20th, the hundreds of thousands who show up for events like the Syracuse Nationals Classic Car Show, Syracuse Irish Festival, NCAA Basketball Tournament, NYS High School Track and Field Championships or an outdoor Crunch Hockey game that drew over 21,000 people just over a week ago; we show up. Here in Syracuse, we get behind things.

For a community our size, we do things in a big way. That is why all kinds of promoters from around the country are descending on Syracuse to bring their events here.  Besides the Irongirl Triathlon which will be held here again this year and the Ironman 70.3 event which makes its debut in September, there have been at least 2 other national promoters of half marathon events who have visited Syracuse to investigate bringing a race here.

Why are these events springing up like crazy in Syracuse?  Jeff Mickel, Sports Development Director of the Syracuse Convention and Visitors Bureau, may have the best ability to answer because he is involved in many of these events. “Word is getting out on our community,” said Mikel, “we are getting a reputation as a can do town.  Take the recent Outdoor Classic Hockey Game with the Crunch; there were a lot of reasons why it couldn’t be done. Those reasons were overcome or ignored.”

Despite what others say, Syracuse is becoming a cool place to live. A big reason for this is because we get behind things in our town.

Syrathon 2 starts this week at the Tipp Hill Shamrock Run

SYRATHON returns in 2010!  The City’s Department of Parks and Recreation, with Fleet Feet Sports, The Syracuse New Times, and Brooks Sports, are again proud to offer this unique series of now SIX road races through our city’s parks system, and along charming city streets.  The Series is designed to encourage healthful physical activity year-round, while promoting the sights and sounds of city life.

A new race has been added this year, but the challenge remains the same: to run your own, personal marathon within the City of Syracuse.  Five of the series races showcase distinct neighborhoods and city parks and feature some of the most lovely homes, scenic vistas, and historic markers in the area.  A sixth race, the Mountain Goats, hits them all.

Paige’s Butterfly Run

The Syrathon line up for 2010 includes the Tipp Hill Shamrock Run this Saturday (4 Miles), The Dunn Tire Mountain Goat Run on 5/2 (10 mile or 3k), Paige’s Butterfly Run on 6/5 (5k), The new Inner Harbor 5k on 8/29, Parks Run 9/26 (4 Miles) and the Park to Park Autumn Run on 10/17 (5 miles.)

Participants register for any of the individual races listed above. At each race, stop by the Syrathon/Fleet Feet Sports Booth and fill out a raffle ticket. Weekly prizes will be given away by drawing each week and all entries will be eligible for the Grand Prize Drawing at the end of the series for a High Definition Television.

Prizes to be raffled at the Tipp Hill Run include:

Sometimes in life you can hardly see what’s going on with all the stress that’s cluttering your life. Sometimes you need to take a step back, sometimes you just need to relax. I am personally guilty of letting stress clutter my life; even as I write this I am listing in my head everything that needs to get done today, all the things that I need to accomplish, and sometimes it feels like even breathing needs to be added to my checklist, otherwise I might forget.

Lately stress has been cluttering my view; you see it’s my senior year and well, applications, scholarships, school, work and running sometimes just seems TOO MUCH. But this past week I finally got a break; A SNOW DAY! Simply put, I had a little word with God, asked for a little bit of a break, and graciously, he obliged.

In life, sometimes that’s all we need, just a breath of air, a piece of peace, a snow day. Unluckily though, God can’t intervene with a big snowstorm every time we’re on the edge of a mental breakdown; that’s where running comes in. The next time stress is threatening to ruin your life, give it a run. No, I don’t mean a run of a specific pace, time or mileage. No, I don’t mean go for a run with the idea of accomplishing a goal. Go for a run because you need to think, because you can, because you want to breathe.
