As I was driving home from work the other night, it hit me. It was 5:30 PM and it was not dark. Isn’t it funny that from mid-December to late January, we go into a mental funk where everything seems dark and gray. But then it happens; the amount of daylight gets longer and immediately it feels like we have rounded the corner and are headed to many of the things we love.
With Ground Hog Day and February here, we are at the beginning of the Central New York Road Racing Season. It all gets underway this weekend.
The Chilly Chili 5k in Cazenovia, Mid-Winters Blues Run at Beaver Lake and the Beer and Chili Run in Newport all take place this Sunday. For those of you who are still afraid to go outside, the Finger Lakes Running Club conducts their February Track Meet at Barton Hall at Cornell University. Check out the Coming Up section of the newsletter for more information.
Over 80 Race Organizers met for the annual meeting in our new community room
Last week the Central New York Race Directors Meeting was held. It brought together organizers from races like the Boilermaker to the events that are being held for the first time. One thing is for sure, there will be more choices than ever in 2010 for those who want to participate.
Organizers from over 70 events took part in the meeting to discuss issues like race insurance, marketing, scheduling, sponsors and many other topics.
A trend that is continuing is the professional event companies that are coming to Central New York to conduct events. Last year’s Irongirl Triathlon has been joined this year by the Ironman 70.3 Half Ironman. We also met with a New England sports marketing company who is looking to conduct a new Half Marathon, 10k and 5k in our area in 2011.
Jeff Mickel from the Syracuse Convention and Visitors Bureau, who attended the Race Directors Meeting, may have said it best: “People are finding out what we have known all along, Central New York is one of the best markets in the country for athletics.”

Chilly Chili 5k this Sunday, pick up your packet here Saturday

The annual Chilly Chili 5k race in Cazenovia will be held this Sunday. This gem of a race may be credited with opening up the flood gates for winter running events in our area. I can recall the first Chilly Chili Race; organizers hoped they could get 150 participants and then were amazed that over 450 people showed up six years ago. Last year over 1,000 people crossed the finish line.
This year’s event features the 5k Run/Walk at 2 PM, followed by the Finish Party that will feature chili tasting, Cooperstown Beer tasting and music by former Syracuse Lacrosse star Mikey Powell.
Fleet Feet Sports will host the Chili Chilly Advance Packet Pick Up and Registration at our store at 5800 Bridge Street on Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM. This will be the first packet pick up held in our new 1500 Square Foot Community Room. Participants are encouraged to pick up their packets on Saturday to avoid long lines on race day. |
Come in and meet Bob
Fleet Feet Sports is proud to introduce BOB Strollers. Space in our old store on Erie Boulevard kept us from bringing in baby strollers, but as we got ready to move to the new Bridge Street Store, BOB Strollers were one of the first new products we brought in.
We stock two models of BOB Strollers:
The Revolution Stroller, which doubles as a great every day stroller and a stroller you can take out for a run. We also carry the Ironman Stroller, which is designed for running.

BOB Revolution Stroller |
BOB Ironman Stroller |
Both strollers have so many great safety, comfort and ease of use features that we can’t list them all here, but our staff will be happy to take you through both models to determine what will work best for you. In our evaluation, BOB Strollers offer the best baby stroller value available.
All BOB Stroller purchases are credited to your PR Frequent Buyer Program here at Fleet Feet Sports. Each time your family spends $250 in our store, you will receive a $25 post card from us good towards a future purchase at our store.

Mizuno Education and Wellness Clinic on Snowshoeing
The first in a series of year long Mizuno Education and Wellness Clinics will be held on February 10th, when the 2010 United States Snowshoe Association SNOWSHOE Clinic will be held in our new Community Room at the store on Bridge Street.
Whether you are curious about snowshoes, interested in joining us for Snowshoe Nationals at Highland Forest in March, or have made a recent purchase and have a few questions, come join us at 5:30 pm for an informational clinic.
You can learn more about Crescent Moon and Dion Snowshoes along with all of their advantages for the snowy conditions to come. We will have several Fleet Feet Experts to help you with any question you may have, and even an outdoor runway for you to test the snowshoes, pending cooperation of Mother Nature.
Everyone that attends will receive a coupon for $20 off any purchase of Snowshoes. All attendees will also be entered into a prize raffle for some of our in stock accessories.
So on Thursday, February 10th at 5:30pm, come join Fleet Feet Sports to learn a little more about this growing sport and win some prizes to help get you through this long winter. To RSVP for this event or if you have any questions, please contact the store at 315-446-1444.
Additionally, Fleet Feet Sports is proud to announce Part 2 of the Fleet Feet Snowshoe 5K. We invite you to come join us for this event that is open to runners, walkers and hikers on Sunday, February 14th, at 10:00am at Sunnycrest Park. Registration will open at the Ski Lodge starting at 8:30 to 9:45, with race day registration being $5. If you don’t happen to have a pair of snowshoes, that is no problem. Fleet Feet will also be providing rentals at the race for $5 (while supplies last). |

High School Running Scene
By Lauren MacDonald
No matter where we’re from, no matter what age, no matter what size we are or what time we run, at heart all runners are the same. Lately I have done a lot of college visits. Being a senior in high school, the time for a choice is fast approaching, and this piece of wisdom has definitely struck me. I have visited colleges all over New York, a couple in Pennsylvania and even one in Michigan. No matter how awkward I feel at first, no matter how silly and out of place I think I may seem, all of that seems to slide away when I meet up with the cross country team.
College visits can be intimidating. If you think about it, what you decide and what you see could affect the rest of your life. College in many ways shapes who you will be, so it’s a pretty serious decision (let alone a serious investment). College visits are a great way to just see the college, because you like to know a little bit what your home will look like for the next 4 years, but also to meet the coaches and team. The team will become your family and support systems in the years to come, the people who will get you through not only a tough practice, but homesickness and a hard class as well. As beautiful as any college may be, if you want to run, you need to meet the team.
I spent several overnights at colleges this year and have had a great time on every single one of them. When the time comes, I will have such a hard time deciding, not only because all of them are great schools, but because I’ve made such great friends at each and every one of them. So here’s to runners everywhere and the great connection that we share! |
