Running and Walking Friends:

The 4th of July holiday always brings some unique events: parades, fireworks and picnics come to mind.

But the 4th of July also brings quite a few athletic events, like the Cazenovia Foot Races, The Tour de France and of course the Boilermaker is just around the corner.

Fleet Feet Sports hopes that you have a great 4th of July and if you have family in from out of town this week, bring them by and say hello.

Boilermaker 2006

If you would like to participate in either the 8k Walk or 5k Run, you can do so at the Health and Fitness Expo on Friday July 7 or Saturday July 8. The Expo will be held at 2150 Bleecker Street in Utica.

50 Marathons in 50 Days

Sam Thompson is going to take the message of the Mississippi Gulf Coast to the nation with his feet. The Mississippi native will run 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days to let people know that South Mississippi still needs help to recover from Hurricane Katrina.

He began his trek on Saturday in Colorado at the Leadville Ultra Marathon which is held at elevations that often reach over 10,000 feet above sea level. As a chaser, Sam also has completed a marathon in Bozeman Montana and Casper Wyoming.

Thompson is hoping to attract the attention of the local media at each marathon to bring awareness to the aftermath of Katrina in the Gulf Coast Region. "I'm usually too busy to connect to the news," the 25-year-old graduate of Rhodes College in Mississippi said. "But from volunteers who come down here, over and over again, they tell me they are amazed how bad it is.

"The news isn't covering it any more. The prevailing feeling seems to be, 'If I don't see it on TV, forget about it.'

"I want to let the country know there are still lots of people in great need. People are moving back, there are stories of hope. I hope we have a reawakening across the country about the Coast."

If you would like to follow Thompson’s 50 marathons in 50 consecutive days you visit his website and follow his account of each marathon on his web blog. You can also learn more about how you can support his effort.
