Running and Walking Friends:

This past weekend was one of the great weekends ever in Central New York . Featuring an unbelievable run by the Orange Basketball team, temperatures in the 50's and a neighborhood running/walking event on Tiperrary Hill, it was a very special weekend that will be hard to repeat.

Gerry McNamara, with a heart stopping performance that a movie script writer would have a hard time recreating, led the Orange to their second straight Big East Tournament Championship. A game winning three point shot against Cincinnati , a three to force overtime versus UConn, a key three and assist to beat Georgetown and the three point shot that put them ahead to stay versus Pittsburgh , only added to the legend of McNamara.

The weather turned from chilly and gray to sunny and warm this past weekend and folks were breaking out the shorts, bikes, skateboards and sunglasses. This time of year, weather changes quickly, so everyone enjoyed the nice weekend.

Saturday was the first ever Shamrock 4 Mile Run/Walk put on by the Tipperrary Hill Neighborhood Association. Over 900 people registered for this first time event, a truly amazing turnout. Participants were rewarded with a great atmosphere, a challenging course, great organization and a beautiful day overlooking the city. Photos and Results from the event are now posted.

Give Back to the Running and Walking Community by Volunteering

We all love to participate in a well-organized and well-executed race. In order to make things run smoothly, though, race directors often need many volunteers. These volunteers can be hard to come by, and without them the quality of the events can suffer. This summer, Fleet Feet will be organizing a volunteer group to help out at races: The Fleet Feet Volunteer Squad sponsored by Asics and Trapper's Pizza Pub in DeWitt.

In exchange for volunteering at two of the races on our Volunteer Squad Race Schedule below, you will receive a free Asics technical shirt and a party at 4:30 on August 20 at Trapper's with great prize giveaways from Asics and Fleet Feet. Volunteers can bring family members to the party at a price of $5 each.

Volunteer Squad Race Schedule (more events may be added soon):

  • Wilber-Duck Downtown Mile, April 28
  • Great Strides 5K, May 20
  • Paige's Butterfly Run, June 3
  • Aids Walk/Run, June 4
  • Willow Bay 5K Run & Fitness Walk for Women, August 19
  • Cazenovia Triathlon, August 20

Volunteer to give back to the local running and walking community today by calling Fleet Feet at 315.446.1444 or by e-mailing FFvolunteer@hotmail.com .

High School Running Scene by David Riccardi

As it is probably no surprise to anyone, Fayetteville-Manlius won the Nike Indoor National 4 x mile relay in Maryland this weekend. The team's time, 17:33, was a Section 3 and meet record and the fastest time in the nation this year. According to a poster on a Dyestat.com forum, Tommy Gruenewald ran a 4:17 spilt, Owen Kimple and John Heron each ran 4:22, and Geoff King ran a 4:32 leg. FM also came in 3rd in the distance medley relay. Ben White (Photo below - at right - not from this meet) , the senior middle distance star from Liverpool HS, came in third place in the open mile race, running 4:17.
