Running and Walking Friends:

The headline on the front page of the Syracuse Post Standard on Friday got our attention:

Bow-Hunting Urged for Green Lakes State Park .”

State Officials from the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation are touring Green Lakes State Park today to consider a request to allow limited bow-hunting on the near 2,000 acres of property in the State Park. Some residents of the neighborhoods surrounding Green Lakes have complained that deer are eating landscaping and leaving dropping on their properties, a problem that is not unique to the neighbors of Green Lakes .

What is most perplexing is not that residents would be concerned about damage to their properties, but that the State is considering deer bow-hunting as a recreational opportunity.

According to the Post Standard article on Friday, Edward Heinrich, Director of the Central Region of the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is quoted as saying “ " Our approach is that it adds another recreational opportunity."

Anyone who has hiked, walked, run, cycled or camped in Green Lakes State Park knows that the deer who frequent the park have so much contact with humans that they no longer fear people. Why anyone would think that allowing bow-hunters to shoot stationary deer in Green Lakes State Park would provide a “recreational opportunity” is hard to imagine.

Of course the fate of the deer aside, allowing bow-hunting in Green Lakes State Park is not fair to those who use the upper trails on a daily basis for hiking, walking, running and cycling. Part of the joy of using these trails is the safety that individuals feel, not having to deal with automobile traffic.

If you would like to provide your opinion to The New York State Office of Parks and Recreation and Historic Preservation, you can call the State Office in Albany at 518-474-0456 or the Central Region Office at 315-492-1756.
