STC pops the cork on a new running year at 10:07AM New Years Day

Every year Jerry Smith designs a fun route to run and Rick Cleary pops the champagne cork at 10:07 AM in front of the Spaghetti Warehouse in Syracuse to start the annual New Years Day Resolution Run.

The Syracuse Track Club kicks off the New Year with this low key and fun event. Last year, club member Richard Brown ran the race in a kilt or was that a skirt? Anyway, this is a prediction run in which you predict the time it will take you to complete the course. Usually this is not easy, but when you add the fact that nobody really knows what distance is being run (Jerry Smith knows give or take 800 meters) and you can't look at your watch, this is really becomes a guessing game.

After the run, all are invited in to the Spaghetti Warehouse for chili, pasta, bread and beer.

There is no advance registration, just show up on New Years morning anytime after 9AM. The event is free to all current STC members and to those who join the club or renew their membership that day. Otherwise, it's $10 for everyone else. Such a deal!

This week you can get free race money at Fleet Feet if you come tie one on. Just stop by and try on a pair of Saucony shoes like the Grid Omni, Grid Hurricane, Trigon, Shadow or other great Saucony shoes. When you do, we will give you a scratch off ticket. The dollar amount represented on the scratch ticket is good towards your next race entry when you register on Active.com. Every ticket is a WINNER!

Each ticket has a prize of $2, $5, $10 or $20 off any race through June 30, 2005 that you register for with Active.com. You must be 18 to enter and this offer is good while scratch ticket supply lasts.

High School Running Scene by David Riccardi

2004 has been a historic year for high school running scene in Central New York .

By my count an astonishing 21 new Section 3 records were set for indoor and outdoor track. In every discipline of the sport, from field events to sprints to the distance events, new boundaries were pushed. The highest accomplishment in the state, winning a Federation championship, was achieved in 6 individual track events and 1 cross-country team title by Section 3 competitors.

When FM won that team title, they shattered average team-time course record on the site where the NYS Federation championships have been held for many years. FM also placed 2nd at the first ever team nationals for cross-country this fall. 3 individuals from CNY were invited to compete in the Footlocker National Championships, with only 80 invitations given out across the country.

The Hamilton Christmas Relays took place this week, and the results can be found at Leonetiming.com. Boys - Girls results ...
