The holiday season is all about traditions. Family, religion, food, fun, music, lights, gift giving and many other traditions make this a very special time of year.
We know it is hard to pass up Aunt Ruth's Christmas cookies or your neighbor Bill's homemade turkey barbecue, but why not start a new holiday tradition? Get your friends, neighbors or visiting family members and take them out for a walk, run, sledding, skating or some other physical activity. One word of caution: some of these folks may not be as physically active or fit as you, so take it easy and use moderation.
Another great possibility is to go to your local gym or health club. Most will allow your visitors in with a guest pass. There your guests can use the treadmill, weights, indoor track or pool. You will burn off some energy, calories and take a little stress out of this holiday season by exercising.
Best of all, you will feel better and may introduce someone else to the benefits of exercise. Now please pass the celery and cream cheese!

| New World Record set for the marathon on a treadmill. |
|
 |
|
Michael Wardian, 30, ran a 2:23:58 marathon (26.2 miles) on Saturday at the grand opening of a running store in Arlington , VA. His time breaks the old treadmill marathon world record, set by Josh Cox in April of this year by about 7 minutes .
After starting around 5 minutes and 30 seconds per mile, Wardian's last few miles averaged just over 5 minutes per mile. By the finish, he was surrounded by a cheering crowd including his family and fellow U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials qualifiers Edmund Burke, Eric Kean, and Heather Hanscom.
"It's the longest I ever ran without going anywhere," smiled Wardian after his marathon effort.
Related Info... It's hard enough to run that distance out in the open, but Wardian -- who qualified for the Olympic trials this year -- set a time of 2:23:58. The previous record was 2:31:04, according to "The Book of Alternative Records."
Wardian, 30, said he heard about runners staying on the treadmill for 24 hours, and he wanted to add a treadmill marathon to the dozens of others he has run.
"It's difficult just because you always know where you are so you can't trick yourself," Wardian said. "You just look down and you know where you are."
The run was part of the grand-opening of a new running store in Arlington called Pacers. Owner Christopher Farley said the marathon required intense focus.
"The monotony of a treadmill -- the idea that you have to stay balanced for almost two-and-a-half hours -- is a lot harder," Farley said. "It really becomes claustrophobic."

| STC pops the cork on a new running year at 10:07AM New Years Day |
|
 |
|
Every year Jerry Smith designs a fun route to run and Rick Cleary pops the champagne cork at 10:07 AM in front of the Spaghetti Warehouse in Syracuse , kicking off the annual New Years Day Resolution Run.
The Syracuse Track Club kicks off the New Year with this low key and fun event. Last year, club member Richard Brown ran the race in a kilt or was that a skirt? Anyway, this is a prediction run in which you predict the time it will take you to complete the course. Usually this is not easy, but when you add the fact that nobody really knows what distance is being run (Jerry Smith knows give or take 800 meters) and you can't look at your watch, this is really becomes a guessing game.
After the run, all are invited in to the Spaghetti Warehouse for chili, pasta, bread and beer.
There is no advance registration, just show up on New Years morning anytime after 9AM. The event is free to all current STC members and to those who join the club or renew their membership that day. Otherwise, it's $10 for everyone else. Such a deal! |

| The first snow |
|
 |
|
Last Tuesday was the first significant snow of the season and a perfect day to go for a run at Green Lakes State Park .
About two inches of the white stuff covered the trails and parking lots. Because the snow had arrived so quickly, road crews had not yet been out. From the parking lot we headed out in a clock wise loop of Green Lake in the midst of a light snow squall. Heading by the Beach House and Snack Bar, we could only imagine the folks who occupied the beach just a few months ago. Lifeguards getting ready to patrol the beach, children building sand masterpieces and sun bathers, all held court on this beach. The only inhabitants now were the flocks of ducks and geese who floated like bobbers on the lake.
The lake, which usually is a brilliant green color, was now steel gray, as the snow picked up in intensity. As we neared the end of Green Lake we could not see the other side. Every once in a while we would pass another person out for a walk, with a nod of the head, we all acknowledged that we were lucky to be there. It was strange, the only sounds we could hear were those of our running shoes squeaking in the dry powder on the ground.
As we make our way to Round Lake , (photo at right) the snow comes down harder. It is starting to pile up on the ground, making our steps a little slower. It is a magical place back there around Round Lake . We think about how many times we have enjoyed it without snow, but this is special. We pass by the route that leads to the upper trails. Darkness was already setting in so we opt to loop Round Lake again and call it a day.
Heading back to the parking lot, we are now running into the snow which is coming down sideways. It hits our face and clothes and makes visibility difficult. We press on knowing that today is precious because we never know what tomorrow will bring. Most of the visual clues we look for on the trails around Green Lake are covered by snow. While running we can't help but think, we stole this run today. Many people would not have gone out in the snow, were still at work, toiling over a big project or at school. Sometimes you just have to take what the day brings.
As we reach the end, we can see the brown boat house in the distance. It signals an end to a perfect Central New York Day.

Just 3 days after Andrew McCann and Tommy Gruenewald ran at the Foot Locker National Championships some 3000 miles away from Syracuse , F-M was again making headlines. At the Jack Morse Relays Tuesday night, Fayetteville-Manlius' 4 x 1600 m team set a Section 3 record with a time of 17:57.70. McCann and Gruenewald, along with Owen Kimple and Jared Burdick, averaged just over 4:29 per 1600 m. The next team was nearly 2 minutes behind. Other then that, the two indoor meets for boys and girls were relatively quiet. Liverpool took both meet team titles.

Section 3 runners travel out to Hamilton College for the Christmas Relays this week. 2 separate meets for the girls and the boys will be held on different school nights this year, which differs from years past when the boys and girls ran on the same day during vacation. Hamilton 's track, with its long straight-aways and its unusual and hard surface, will not lend itself to fast times.
