Pride in Syracuse

Pride in Syracuse
Any community is best served by having a beautiful environment for visitors, residents and those contemplating moving there. It is also more clear today than ever before, we have become a society of “haves” and “have not’s” when it comes to personal fitness. Because of this we are introducing Pride in Syracuse.

Pride in Syracuse is collaboration between civic minded local businesses who believe that our community is best served by having clean city streets and healthy residents.

The first phase of Pride in Syracuse will include monthly trash clean up events in the City of Syracuse, concentrating on the inner and west side. Local charities will be invited to apply to help in the clean‐up efforts. Four local charities will be selected to receive a $1,000 donation from Pride in Syracuse. The criteria for being selected as one of the charities to receive $1,000 include:

  • How many volunteers the charity can bring to one or more of the clean up events
  • The overall need of the charity

Local charities who wish to apply only need to send a letter addressing how and why they will meet the criteria and email it to Ed Griffin.

Besides local charities, concerned residents are also welcome to participate. A rake, work gloves and comfortable footwear are recommended. Pride in Syracuse will provide refreshments and garbage bags. The City of Syracuse Department of Public Works will pick up all trash collected. Each clean up event will be 3 hours long. Participants will be invited back to Kitty Hoynes after the clean up for snacks and a cash bar.

Clean up events will be held on Saturday mornings at 10 AM. The dates of the clean up events are July 16, August 13, September 17 and October 15. Volunteers are asked to report to the corner of West Fayette Street and South Franklin Street, in the parking lot near Kitty Hoynes Irish Pub and Restaurant.

The second phase of Pride in Syracuse will involve a fitness initiative for the community and will be introduced in 2012.

Pride in Syracuse is being organized by Fleet Feet Sports, O’Brien and Gere, Kitty Hoynes Irish Pub and Restaurant, King and King Architects and New Balance.
