Dear Coach,
I have spinal stenosis, and I can barely run. I have been officiating soccer in my spare time for over 32 years. I'm also retired letter carrier, which is a job I did for 35 years. That toil has taken over my body. I am wondering if any shoes, or stretches, etc.can help, or am I close to being washed up?
Thank you,
Roger
Dear Roger,
Spinal stenosis tends to respond best to flexing forward. Exercises that might help are:
- Lying on your back and bringing knees towards your chest
- Lying on your back with knees bent and rocking knees side to side
- Sitting in a chair and reaching towards the ground
I would suggest wearing a more supportive shoe with more cushioning, such as the Hoka Bondi, New Balance 1080, Saucony Echelon, or Brooks Transcend (just to name a few). However, it would be important to get fit by a Fleet Feet Outfitter to ensure that your shoes have the right amount of support for your unique feet. If you do not notice improvements in your back, I would also recommend seeing a physical therapist because they will do a more individualized evaluation.
Good luck!
Coach Bethany
