I ran a half marathon last Saturday in Ithaca. The first 8 miles were great! I came out of the woods and onto the pavement and into the sun. The external temperature was probably high 60’s or low 70’s by then. My feet started to burn and it became very painful to run. This has happened before during half and full marathons and at these temps. I had no problems with colder temps such as Lake Effect Half or the Syracuse Half. I wear Feetures or Balega socks and Hoka shoes. Any ideas on how to keep feet cool in warm temps??

Hi Cheryl,
I think it’s great that you are already are wearing Feetures/Balega socks because they are made of a poly-synthetic material that will help wick moisture away. Compression socks may be a helpful to return blood flow back to the heart to reduce blood from pooling in your feet (which therefore helps to reduce heat in the feet). Another thing to consider while racing in the warmer weather would be to get a more breathable sneaker. There may be a style of Hoka that has an open mesh to allow better airflow. Lastly, I would suggest that you make sure that you are keeping your core temperature low by wearing lightweight clothing and drinking water.
