Name:
Rob Shostack
Age:
Has-Been
High
School:
West Genesee Senior High School
College:
LeMoyne College, Under-Graduate, Syracuse University Graduate
Occupation:
Operations Technician, Stickley Information Technology
Personal
Records:
I am slowly surviving the "running wars" in Syracuse.
Favorite
Races:
I haven't found my absolute favorite yet.
I like
a ton of events for all different reasons. While coaching in New
Endgland I enjoyed the series of All New England Championships (NEIAA).
For one day every athlete from DI to DIII gets to get after it and
David gets his or her chance to slay goliath. I like the idea of
that and the excitement it generates.
As I get
older, I am enjoying more and more the chance to run against working
professionals like myself in the Corporate Challenge every year.
The idea of a bunch of 40 hour a weekers like me getting out to
run, be healthy and have some friendly athletic competition is really
exciting and great to see as this society grows more and more out
of shape.
Favorite
Workouts:
Depends on the athlete, his/her level of fitness, goals, time of
the season and needs.
Favorite Places to Train: Beaver Lake
& the Erie
Canal (I actually prefer the Camillus section of the canal for its
softer
surface and its relative seclusion from the "running masses.")
Important
Races on your 2003 Schedule:
Any race the Fleet Feet athlete I work with is aiming for.
Outlook
on Running:
Training-
Mileage is way overated. Running the correct mix of volume per intensity
for your planned event at the athltetes level of fitness with constant
adjustement. Those keystones will get you to your goal and keep
you fresh and healthy. That "what doesn't kill you only makes
you stronger" propensity by coaches moe than usually leaves
a trail of broken athletes, and their dreams and is the great tragedy
of our sport.
Example. The Arkansas athlete doesn't go over 80-90 or so miles
a week, yet the Colorado and/or Stanford Athlete routinely goes
into the 100-110 range? Train harder or train smarter? Mileage is
back to being all the rage again, but who has more Titles? XC &
Track. MacDonald or Wetmore & Lannana combined? If you answered
MacDonald you are right.
What
Most People Don't Know about You:
I have coached multiple All-Americans, conference champions, and
state Champion individuals and teams at both the High School and
College (DIII) levels, so I believe totally in the philosophy I
have evolved from my mentor Jack Reed currently at Skan, yet when
I step on the line armed with all those reasons to believe, I am
still just as nervous as the modified girl who is running her first
Cross Country Race ! Isn't running a great
sport.?
